When you join any CSA you enter into a relationship with your food source that is inherently unlike your experience at a grocery store and even a farmers market. The foundation of a CSA is the two-way commitment between the member and the local farmer. On the farmer's side, our commitment is to quality, organic growing methods, and variety. In turn, members accept a reasonable amount of uncertainty associated with weather and other unforseen or uncontrollable circumstances that can affect the contents of their weekly box. You can expect the following from First Hand Harvest's CSA:
- We will work dawn to dusk and do everything possible to supply you with a variety of high quality, naturally grown produce.
- The vegetables in your box are local and seasonal. What does that mean? You will not receive tomatoes in June, brussels sprouts in July, or spinach in August.
- The variety of contents in your weekly box will increase over the course of the 20 week growing season. In early June, you will may receive fewer items in larger quantities.
- We plan to include a cut, washed salad mix, arugula, or head lettuce in every box that can be used for an entree salad or side salads.
- Some items will be appear in consecutive boxes due to growth and harvest patterns. For example, a bed of green beans will produce for 3 weeks. During that time you will receive beans 3 weeks in a row. This is the case for several crops we grow.
- Most boxes will contain a cooking green. Based on feedback from past CSA season we are cutting back on cooking greens, but you should expect to receive bok choi, swiss chard, kale, and spinach. We will provide cooking advice and recipies for these extremely healthy vegetables.
